LEGENDARY STUDENTS
Which high school did you attend
and what made it memorable, if
anything?
I attended the German International
School in Tamboerskloof, Cape Town.
I was part of the robotics team when
I was at DSK. And one of the most
memorable things was when we went
to America for World Championships.
I’d been involved in robotics for about
four or five years at DSK, and then
in 2019 we won the South African
Champs.

EDITORS NOTE: Aaron Filmalter
is a high achiever and currently
doing his BSc (Honours) in
Quanity Surveying. He won
the Class Award for the BSc in
Construction Studies third year
cohort at this year’s Prize Giving
Ceremony for his performance in
2024. The Class Award is given
to the best overall student of the
respective class.
What led you to study at the CEM
department? What programme
did you choose and why?
I originally applied for two
programmes at UCT and
Stellenbosch; a BSc in Constructions
Studies and a BSc in Engineering
and Mechatronics. I got in for
Mechatronics at Stellenbosch and
for Construction at UCT. While
Stellenbosch has an interesting
nightlife, UCT was closer to where
I have my roots.

Is what you’re doing now
different to what you initially
wanted to do?
Yes. I never understood how broad
Quantity Surveying could be. One of
my lecturers in undergrad, Elmarie
Edwardes, had a very big impact on
my university journey. She always said
to us, “it’s not just about measuring.”
As a QS you need to be good at the
numbers, but you also need to good
at people skills. You need to be able
to talk to your clients, explain to them
what’s going on.
