EDITOR’S NOTE
OF LEGENDS
AND LUNCH
Legend noun (Oxford Dictionary)
1. a traditional story sometimes
popularly regarded
as historical but not
authenticated.
2. an extremely famous or
notorious person, especially in
a particular field.
Mount Everest, South African flag
aloft, triumphant, inspirational and
representative.
We lead with the story of Robin
Marten. Robin is 87. He has made a
seminal contribution to South African
property education at university level,
as well as to the valuation profession,
since he arrived on these shores from
the UK in 1966. He has been a friend
and benefactor of the Department for
many years. The Robin Matern Prize,
which is now in its twentieth year, is
a highlight of our Annual Prize Giving
Day. He is a legend!
The selection of individuals that we
highlight in this edition is limited, as
a matter of practical necessity. There
are many others – alumni, associates,
colleagues, students – that are
making waves, and for whom we are
very proud of. We see them, we salute
them.
Indeed, this edition aims to
celebrate everyone who has an
association with this department.
Legends, big and small, everyone of
them. As the saying goes, everyone
is a legend, at least in one’s own
lunchtime.
Legend has it that there is a resident
ghost in the Centlivres Building.
Centlivres, at the South End of
University Avenue, is the erstwhile
home of this department. The haunting
of Centlivres has its origins in death, in
office, of an academic of our forerunner
department. Over the years there
has been sporadic reports of ghostly
sightings, and signs and sounds of
disembodied academic discourse in the
dead of night (pun intended).
We shall leave this apocryphal
story for another day. This edition
of Masakhe is devoted to corporeal
legends, legends of the ‘famous
or notorious’ kind. We are proud
to showcase individuals – alumni,
associates, colleagues, students
– who are at the summit, pushing
boundaries, defying stereotypes
and making impact. Our cover
photo, emblematic of this theme,
shows Remy Kloos at the summit of
