limbing Kilimanjaro
wasn’t on Remy Kloos’
bucket list, but when it
happened, she gladly
took the challenge in her
stride and ended up falling in love
with the outdoors.
She started out studying at
the Construction Economics and
Management department at the
University of Cape Town as a fresh
undergrad, still not entirely sure
what she wanted to do with her life.
But in school, Kloos had excelled at
both maths and art. Architecture had
seemed like the logical next step,
but she didn’t have a passion for it.
In the end, Property Studies felt like
a better fit and it was still a relatively
new discipline. “I thought that it could
bridge something for me between the
creative and analytical,” she says.
Over the course of her studies,
Kloos fell in love with her subjects
and found her niche in green building,
which was taking off in South Africa
at the time. “I really thrived within the
degree and really enjoyed the content
as well as the connections,” she says.
For her final thesis, Kloos did her
research report on green building
and ended up doing an internship at
the Green Building Council of South
Africa. This combination, says Kloos,
set her up for the years to come and
helped launch her corporate career.
While doing an internship in
London, the Green Building Council
reached out and presented Kloos with
a unique opportunity. Growthpoint
Properties, a pioneer in the green
building space at the time, was
looking for someone to help with their
