CEM PAST
School of Fine Art went its own way,
with the remaining departments
joining the engineering departments
to form the current Faculty of the
Engineering and the Built Environment.
The department moved from the
Centlivres Building in about 2010 to
the fifth level of the Snape Building,
where it is currently housed.
Throughout its history, the
department has been a pioneer in
South Africa, unafraid to innovate,
and leading the way regarding the
education and training, initially of
Quantity Surveying and Building
(Construction) Management and,
later, Property Studies, Housing and
Project Management. It was the first
to introduce Property Studies as a
university-level area of study in South
Africa. The department also pioneered
the establishment of Masters degrees
in Housing, Property Studies and
Project Management in the country,
and of the ‘block-release’ delivery
mode for such programmes. The
department was also first in seeking
and obtaining international recognition
and accreditation of its programmes
through the Royal Institution of
Chartered Surveyors (RICS). In the
words of Professor Keith Cattell
(HoD, 2007 -2015) “…it was because
of an ambition to be internationally
recognisable that we became the lead
department in the country”.
Looking ahead into the future, the
department is determined to carry
on with this legacy of leadership,
this spirit of pushing boundaries and
opening new and different pathways
that similar departments in South
Africa shall follow. According to
Professor Cattell, “that is the spirit
I would prefer being carried on, that
we are a little belligerent, but hugely
informed about why that (change)
is a good idea, in a way that other
people will later realise and catch
up with…”. Amen to that!
