Masakhe 01 DIGITAL HIRES SINGLE - Flipbook - Page 5
EDITOR’S
NOTE
Welcome to the inaugural issue of
Masakhe, the department’s (mostly)
digital magazine. ‘Masakhe’, isiXhosa
for ‘let us build’, is a literal allusion
to the department’s name and
disciplinary domain. Figuratively, the
name captures the ambition that we
have, to build a strong and vibrant
network, a virtual community that
links staff, students, alumni, industry
and all stakeholders that have an
interest in the Department’s status,
profile and operations.
This issue, themed ‘CEM in Space
and Time’ aims to showcase a
dynamic department, a department
in spatial and temporal motion. In
terms of the former, the department’s
journey is captured both in text and
image, from rustic beginnings in
prefabricated accommodation on
the Rugby Fields, to the Centlivres
Building on University Avenue, and
on to its current home, a prime spot
on the fifth floor of the new Snape
Building.
As the leading department of
its kind on the African continent,
the department has always been
at the forefront of innovation in
the education of professionals in
Construction Management, Project
Management, Property and Quantity
Surveying. The pioneering spirit is
encapsulated in a storied past, a
present full of vitality and a bold
vision for the future. This motion
through time is captured in the three
sections in which the magazine is
divided.
Armed with a strategic plan, the
department is re-imagining its future
place, in the EBE faculty, within the
UCT ecosystem and the broader
society, with great confidence and
optimism, as a world class outfit.
I trust that you will find much in
these pages that will entertain, inform
and educate.
