aware that I could before. I feel that I
am being properly equipped for the
professional world.
How have you found your
leadership position in the
department and what has
it taught you?
My leadership position as the QS
student representative has been
fulfilling thus far. I have found
great comfort in the department’s
unwavering support of my voice,
which has in turn given rise to the
voices of those in my class. At times
it can be challenging to work through
the needs of my peers and to find
solutions that are best suited for the
majority, however I would not trade
my role for any other. I am someone
who strives to find order in the chaos
and to make those around me as
comfortable as possible, thus I am
grateful to have the privilege of being
enabled to do so through my class
representative role.

What made you pursue this
degree?
From a young age I always
knew that I wanted to be in the built
environment. Although my aspiring
profession within the industry has
evolved through the years, I am
grateful for this as it has ended with
me finding my way to the world
of construction. As a woman, and
woman of colour, I was raised to
go where I fear and to push myself
especially in unfamiliar spaces. I am
learning every single day and I cannot
wait for what else this industry has to
offer me.

What are your future
aspirations? What do you plan
on pursuing after graduation?
My future plans are to pursue a
fulfilling and successful career
within the consulting side of quality
surveying and even the property
sector, as I have now dabbled a bit
in both fields (from vacation work).
I aspire to also eventually gain my
professional registration as a PrQS
(Professional quantity surveyor).
Overall, I have a deep desire to push
myself to achieve great things as a
woman in the built environment, and
therefore I will forge my way to this
goal as the opportunities arise.

Do you have any advice for
prospective students and
applicants who wish to be
where you are now?
My advice would be to embrace your
fears and to go especially where you
feel small. With time, your confidence
will grow and you will not believe the
opportunities that come your way.
Work hard and stay grounded but
learn to find a balance between your
personal and school life so that you
do not burn out early on. This degree
can be very challenging at times, but
it will all be worth it in the end. UCT
will push you to discover great things
about yourself.
