in Cape Town’s District Six. Her
family was forcibly removed by the
apartheid government in 1981 while
she was only eight years old. She
and her family settled in the Cape
Flats. She attended five different
primary schools before she attended
her secondary school and eventually
matriculated. Upon matriculation, she
earned a Legal Practice Secretarial
Diploma. Prior to her tenure at
the University, she worked for an
Insurance Broker for eight years
and was responsible for insurance
renewals and new business.
She offered her advice to the
longevity of her stay in her career,
“Over the years I had great colleagues
who became family. You spend
most of your day working with your
colleagues and hence it is important
to get along. Be kind and have
empathy. It is important to work as
a TEAM.” Mareldia also highlighted
the importance of good people
skills and ability to adapt to change,
constant training, responsibility and
accountability as important virtues
in the workspace. “In general, just do
your job to the best of your ability.”
Away from work, Mareldia is the
proud mother of two children, a
daughter aged twenty-nine and
a son aged twenty-four and she
loves spending time with her family,
“As old as they are we still enjoy
family vacations together.” She has
been married to her husband for
thirty years who both enjoy taking
unplanned road trips. She also enjoys
cooking, reading and binge-watching
Chinese dramas.
