n this day and age, particularly
among Gen Z, it is rare to
hear that people stay on their
jobs for a very long time.
However, for nearly a quarter
of a century (twenty-four years
to be exact), Mareldia Fagodien
has served the University of Cape
Town in various positions and
departments. She currently works as
the Academic Administration Officer
for Masters and PhD students helping
with applications, registrations,
examinations and timetables. “My
job is to assist students with their
journey at UCT. I love the interaction
with students. I am happy when I am
able to assist students to resolve their
administrative issues. This gives me
job satisfaction,” she shared with us.
Mareldia’s journey at UCT began in
ISSUE 1
July of 2000 when she was a given
a two-week temp position which
was then extended to three months.
She applied for and eventually was
appointed as a receptionist in the Law
Faculty in October 2000. Once again,
she applied and was accepted as
the Senior Secretary in the graduate
School of Humanities Faculty Office
in January of 2001. In only two
years, Mareldia would find herself
promoted once again, this time to the
role of Postgraduate Administration
Assistant in the Construction. This
was back in January of 2003 and she
has been serving the construction
department ever since.
Beside her longevity at UCT and
various roles, Mareldia is a Malay
Muslim of Coloured descent. She is
one of four siblings and was born
