The department has a complement
of approximately 31 highly qualified,
experienced and motivated academic
and administrative staff. Out of these
17 are permanent academic staff,
6 full-time administrative staff, and
about 8 part-time academic staff.
The total number of students
(in 2023) was 663, comprising
397 on the two undergraduate
programmes, 65 on the three honours
programmes, 175 on the two taught
MSc programmes, 7 on the research
MPhil and 19 on the research PhD.
Though student demand is high,
numbers of students are kept steady
and class sizes relatively small. The
department thus has one of the
most favourable staff-student ratios
in the country, allowing for a more
personalised student experience.
Another noteworthy feature is the
strong PhD cohort.
Uniquely among similar
departments in the country the
department boasts of two accredited
research units, namely the Urban
Real Estate Research Unit (URERU)
and the Sustainability-oriented
Cyber research Unit for the Built
Environment (S+CUBE). Another first
is that the department hosts two
academic journals, these being the
Journal of African Real Estate and the
Journal of Construction Business and
Management.
