CEM PRESENT
Alan Stevens has two children:
two sons and one daughter. While his
daughter found a love for teaching
(following in her mother’s footsteps),
both sons followed in their father’s
footsteps. Both sons applied to their
father’s department; however, their
school marks were not up to the
standard of the competing applicants,
and Stevens, being in charge of
admissions, rejected both of them.
“They hated me for it!” he exclaims.
“You’ve got to be honest in life,” he
explains, a smile on his face. His sons
are now both successful Quantity
Surveyors, making their father proud.
In addition to his fruitful lecturing
career at UCT, Alan Stevens was
also an external examiner at multiple
South African universities and the
University of Dar es Salaam. A sports
fanatic, Stevens recalls flying to Dar
es Salaam for the first time the day
South Africa played in the 1995
Rugby World Cup final, waiting in
anticipation to find out the results
upon landing.
Alan Stevens has nothing but
love for UCT and the Department
of Construction and Economic
Management, boasting the brilliant
reports obtained from the Royal
Institution of Chartered Surveyors.
When asked what makes the UCT
department so unique, Stevens
responds, “We’ve always been
conscientious. The quality of these
people’s minds… They are good, and
they take the job seriously. We were a
team. And I sincerely believe that they
still are today.”
Years in the field and merely a few
out of it, Stevens still beams with pride
and love, recalling his time lecturing at
the university. His adoration and care
show what a special place it truly is.
