I
t is impossible to recognise
the spectacular growth of the
Construction and Economics
Management Department
without accrediting much of
its progress and reputation to the
honourable – and ever humble –
Emeritus Professor Alan Stevens.
After lecturing at the University of
Cape Town for around forty years,
Alan Stevens has since retired and
settled down, yet his story remains to
be told.
Coming from humble origins, Alan
Stevens was an average scholar at
school, choosing to pursue Quantity
Surveying at UCT for affordability
reasons. However, to his surprise, he
quickly fell in love with it. Starting
his five-year part-time course in
1960, the year UCT’s new School
of Architecture was built, Alan
Stevens discovered his passion
for mathematics and measuring,
deepening his love for the degree.
It is not surprising, therefore, that
he qualified with distinction. He
was awarded the gold medal by
the Association of South African
Quantity Surveyors for his unrivalled
academic efforts, declaring him the
top Quantity Surveying student of
all five universities offering Quantity
Surveying in the country.
During his studies, Stevens worked
part-time at Babbs and Labdon as
an articled Quantity Surveyor before
qualifying and moving to Namibia,
where he played for the then-called
South West African cricket team.
