The building was co-designed by Len
Thornton White who worked as a
lecturer for the school of Architecture
and considered it his ‘magnum opus’
(great work). Construction began
in 1950 and its doors were opened
in the 1950 for the first lectures.
Before this building was opened the
School of Architecture was housed
at the wooden huts that adjoined the
rugby fields. The collections housed
in the two huts were then moved
to Centilivres in the 1950s in what
has become the Built Environment
Library (previously known as the
Architectural Library).
Today the building still stands
and now houses the School of
Architecture, Planning and Geomatics.
Would it not be worth taking some
time to look back a appreciate
history’s long tail?
